Ostara Food

Food commonly associated with Ostara include, of course the good old fashioned ‘egg’ and anything else that was springing into life at that time such as early spring greens like spinach or dandelions, roasted lamb, rabbit, chicken and other sources of dairy like milk and cheese. These food items all represent the theme of new life and fertility linked to the spring equinox.

Children would dye their hard boiled eggs and the neat them later in the day, omelettes, scrambled egg, frittata and any other form of cooked egg will suffice.

Did you know that the Hot Cross Bun, is actually a sabbat food, the cross representing the 4 quarters - the cardinal points, North, South, East and West. Also the seasons, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

Honey also plays a big part in most sabbats, based on the fact it is so good for us and last for such a long time, so was readily available. Honey cake is always a favourite at any sabbat.

Why not make a wild garlic pesto and add it to hot pasta or hot new potatoes for extra flavour.

Wild Garlic Pesto

100g wild garlic

50g Parmesan grated

50g hazelnuts, skinned and toasted

olive oil

lemon juice, to taste

Thoroughly wash your wild garlic and pop in the food processor, blitz until fairly well broken up.

Add your Parmesan and process further, this will help to break down the garlic leaves.

Finally add your hazelnuts. When the nuts are added you will want to have your olive oil to hand; turn the machine back on, and add olive oil to your desired consistency.

Add lemon juice to taste.

If you want to make in a pestle and mortar instead and feel free to change out the hazelnuts for any other type of nut you like. (Remove the shell and skins first)
